We’re Rafa and Gabo — two brothers who grew up in Delray Beach, Florida, after moving here as kids. For the past ten years, the ocean has been our playground: boating, surfing, and exploring the coast while discovering the incredible wildlife that makes this place so special.
But when sargassum algae began invading our beaches, it changed everything. Surf spots we loved disappeared, the beaches became unpleasant, and most importantly, sea turtles struggled to nest. That struck a chord with us.
So we asked ourselves: What if we could turn this challenge into something positive?
Working alongside friends in Mexico facing the same problem, we began experimenting. We collected sargassum and combined it with recycled plastic bottles pulled from the shoreline. After months of trial and error in our garage, we developed a durable material held together with eco-friendly, water-based glue. Today, our innovation is protected by a patent, backed by sustainability certification, and supported by community partnerships.
The result? Flip-flops that are comfortable, stylish, and good for the planet.
That’s how Kelps was born — a small step toward cleaning our beaches and protecting our ocean, one pair at a time.
